Holistic Practices I’m Implementing During Quarantine.

We are well and truly into our new “normal” of social distancing and self quarantining! I don’t think this pandemic is something anyone would have predicted to happen in this generation, but here we are doing the best we can under these wild circumstances.


It’s been such a strange time for me and honestly quite a big adjustment. Before Covid-19 hit, I had just accepted a full-time position at a local elementary school working as a paraeducator. Something I believe was so timely and 100% from God. I worked a total of 3 days with the kids and 3 days with staff before we were encouraged to begin quarantining. Although I’m not working, nor am I salaried, by the grace of God I am still getting paid through all of this which has been a massive blessing to Gideon and I.

It took me a good few weeks to settle into self isolation. As an extrovert feeling stuck or trapped with very minimal physical human connection (apart from hubs of course) has been a challenge. I didn’t feel like myself at all. I felt unmotivated, lazy and I didn’t have the drive to even want to achieve anything. On top of that, the thought of what other people were dealing with during this time weighed super heavy on my heart. The genuine struggles people are faced with is beyond tragic and the more I think about it, the more upset and helpless I feel.


I’m someone who gets enjoyment from ticking things off their to-do list and doing things + being on the go gives me purpose. While I allowed myself a few weeks to sit in the unknown and the varying emotions I was facing, it got to this point where I was just done with feeling that way. I knew that in order to continue to grow through this season of complete unknowns and move forward I needed to go back to my roots and start implementing all the beautiful practices I know + love.

So with that being said, here are a few of the beautiful routines I have been creating for myself during this time. These are practices that always help ground me, keep me motivated and feeling whole.


SPENDING TIME WITH JESUS


I know I’m not the only one who sometimes cuts my time with God short. But during this time we aren’t busy and there really isn’t any room for excuses. I have been embracing and carving out long periods of time to spend with my Saviour. I’ve been delving deeper into more books of the bible, learning more about who Jesus is and what He wants to tech me through His word. I’ve been spending time in gratitude too. While there is a strong need and desire to be asking a lot from God during this time, I have been convicted even more so, to really bring my thanks to Him. There truly is so many beautiful blessings weaved into this season and I am choosing daily to make a conscious decision to be grateful to Him.

MOVEMENT


I don’t think I have ever missed weight training more than I do right now. While I definitely feel the pressures of not wanting to gain a bunch of weight during this time, I also need to remember to be kind to myself and honour my body the best way I know how with what I’ve got. My workouts look extremely different to what they did a few months ago and I know everyone is in the same boat. I am trying my best to be intuitive with the way I am moving my body and being more mindful of what feels best for me. I will usually go for a walk everyday because I really love breathing in the fresh air and getting some sunshine + vitamin D on my skin. I’ve also been making up a few home workouts or following some people online.

Exercising releases good endorphins and that’s what I need right now. For the most part we are all sitting a lot more so even getting a 10-15 minute workout is going to do wonders for every aspect of your health.


These are my current go-to Youtubers + Fitness apps I follow:


Madfit – She posts so many incredible at home, minimal equipment workouts that always leave my body burning. It’s great.

Unshaken Yoga – My sweet friend Denika is beyond gifted in so many different areas, but one that she truly shines at is yoga. She has a beautiful collection of flows with varying levels. I always leave my mat feeling more grounded, refreshed and filled up spiritually + physically. I highly recommend you do some at home yoga with her!

Cambria Joy – I love Cambria’s YouTube channel and recently she posted this awesome 30 minute at home work out. It does require some weights but you can always get creative and use some canned food you have in your cupboard if you don’t have access to weights.

Fiton App – This is a completely free app you can download and make super achievable goals for yourself during this time. The workouts are amazing and super motivating if you need that extra push.


NOURISHMENT


This point is near and dear to my heart as most of you already know if you’ve been following along on my journey. I wholeheartedly believe that food is medicine and I know first hand how eating an abundance of eating whole foods benefits your body.

In those first few weeks of self isolation I mentioned that I didn’t feel myself and I’d be lying if I said my diet was perfect during that time, because it wasn’t. I was eating more processed sugar than I’ve eaten in over a year, I wasn’t being intentional about the foods I was consuming and I felt like absolute CRAAAAAP. My mood was all over the place, I felt puffy and my skin was having major breakouts. Food has a massive impact on our bodies in so many different ways. I’m not saying that having chocolate, chips or lollies is bad. But I believe in everything in moderation, those first few weeks really proved that for me.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you what to eat because I know we are all aware of our own bodies and our individual needs. Nourishing + nurturing my body looks like eating a lot more veggies, berries, meats, seeds, nuts, eggs, chickpeas and a few grains here and there. Annnnnd also yummy dairy-free treats in moderation! More whole foods, less processed foods!

There are a few foods + herbs I’ve been incorporating during this time to help support my immune system.

Echinacea+ Elderberry Tea – These two herbs are incredible for immune support and I always feel amazing after drinking this tea each day. I have also been adding a little Matcha latte blend in with this tea and it is truly a game changer!

Garlic + Onion – These are two foods that Gideon and I incorporate in every single one of our meals. Not only do they add incredible flavour but they are super foods that bring so much nourishment to your body.

Turmeric – The ultimate anti-inflammatory herb. We usually use this spice in our curries but recently I have also been getting creative and incorporating it in different meals, like my chia pudding. It sounds weird but tastes seriously amazing! Would you guys like the recipe?

Water – This is a given. We should all be drinking lots of water to continue to flush out any nasty toxins that don’t belong and to keep our bodies hydrated. I’ve been filling up a 900 ml mason jar multiple times a day and drinking out of a straw. For some reason this helps me to drink more water. Haha. You’ve gotta do what works for you. I also love adding lemon juice + ginger in there too. More nutrients, more benefits for your body!


SKIN CARE


As I stated above, because of the extra processed sugar I was consuming, I found that my skin was breaking out pretty badly. This motivated me to spend a little extra time giving my skin the nurturing it clearly needed. I use all my skincare products from WILDFLOWER HARVEST (Mine + my best friends skin care company). I know that what is going on my skin is super important, that’s one of the many reasons we started our company. Our heart is to show you that natural beauty is accessible and it is really important to be mindful about the products we are using. I can pronounce every ingredient that goes on my skin and that is something I pride myself in and am proud of when it comes to our company.

I’ve been taking the extra time to really exfoliate, cleanse, jade role and face mask during this time. And let me tell you, girl my skin is thanking me for it big time.


Along with my skincare I have also been more diligent with my dry brushing practice. This is such a soothing, beautiful and 5 minute ritual you can add into your routine before you shower.

It stimulates the lymphatic system. A lot of bacteria enters into our body through our skin and sometimes we have such a gnarly build up of toxins that the skin physically cannot release the toxins. Dry brushing helps to remove those excess toxins, dead skin cells and unclog pores. This act can help reduce inflammation and reduce fluid retention. I believe it’s a great tool to use, especially in this time where we might be a little more stationary.


PROJECTS + HOBBIES


This has been the perfect time to do all of those little DIY projects around the house you’ve been meaning to do for soooooo long but just haven’t had the time to get around to it. I have taken this time to re-do a few things around our home and it’s already feeling so fresh + new. I have also been enjoying cleaning quite alot, the good deep spring clean. While the circumstances for getting things done isn’t ideal, I am truly thankful for the extra time.

I have been reading SO much more! I currently have about 4 books I’m reading through right now and I love it. I’ve also been painting, creating new recipes and playing around in the kitchen. It’s actually been super fun to dive into different create outlets and put all that emotion and energy into something.


OIL PULLING


A simple, yet sweet practice that I absolutely looooove doing. I get about 1/2 a teaspoon of coconut oil and swish it around my mouth 20 minutes before I brush my teeth morning and night.

Oil pulling is a natural way of killing harmful bacteria in your mouth, it can reduce inflammation in your gums and it’s a natural teeth whitener. I’ve loved incorporating this into my routine.


JOURNALING


One of my ultimate favourite things to do. This is such a wild time for all of us and sometimes it’s hard to find the words to get out all of our emotion. This is why writing + journaling has been such a big part of my life, especially in this time. I just want to tell you + reassure you that your feelings are valid. It doesn’t matter if you are upset about something big or something small. This pandemic has affected every single one of us in one way or another and I know that may of us are grieving the loss of someone or something during this time.

I love that my journal is a sacred space for me to let out my emotions without the fear of judgement. Recently I have been writing a lot to Jesus and it just helps me put things into perspective and allows me the time to feel whatever I want to feel.

If you haven’t been journaling through this, I highly recommend you give it a try. You don’t need to have the perfectly curated narrative set out, you just need to get honest with yourself and allow yourself to start processing some of those hard emotions you might be trying to push down during this time. It truly is transformative and so rejuvenating.

As always I feel like I could seriously write about all the little things I am doing throughout my day that truly help ground me and give me more motivation during this time but I feel like I have written much more than I intended. I would absolutely love, love, loooooove to know a few little holistic practices you guys have been implementing during this time and I would also like to offer up a helping hand if you need it.
