Low-Tox Cleaning Swaps.

I have slowly but surely been making the switch to a more holistic way of living, including reducing the amount of chemicals in cleaning agents I use.

When I first made the switch I started out with topical products such as: facial cleansers and make up. I focussed heavily on what I was putting on my skin but as I became more educated, I realised a large amount of toxins were going into my body through cleaning products. I mean think about it… Every time you bleach your bathroom you can barely breath because the chemicals used are too powerful for our bodies to inhale. To me, that’s not normal, nor is it okay or beneficial for my body and the bodies that enter that room after.

There are SO many different recipes out now for alternate cleaning products which is AMAZING!!!! I like to keep mine pretty simple with ingredients that do the job and aren’t toxic to my body.

We all know my obsession with essential oils and if you don’t, where the heck have you been? I seriously enjoy spending time researching the many benefits essential oils can bring to our bodies and our homes. So much so, Gideon recently purchased me an essential oil book filled with pages educating me on the diversity of these little wonders. I personally adore the brand DoTERRA. I love knowing they are derived from the plant, herb or flower from where it thrives most. No synthetics, no nasties, just 100% pure essential oil.

In the next few paragraphs I am going to share my simple + easy to make recipes with you but first I want to share why I use the ingredients I do.

Lemon is full of antibacterial properties which are amazing for cleaning. It is also a citrus oil which helps to bring a fresh scent + uplifting aroma whilst cleaning.

The OnGuard Blend is known as the protective blend. It has oils like clove cinamon, eycalyptus, rosemary and wild orange. These oils have a cobination of  antibacterial + anti-fugal properties.

Tea Tree contains antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory proterties.

Baking soda is a good cleaning aget because it is a mild alkali. This helps dirt on surfaces to disolve more easily.

Vinegar is amazing as a cleaing agent because it is super acidic. When combined with baking soda it’s a match made in heaven.

Something you need to know: When using essential oils be sure to use a glass bottle instead of plastic when making your own recipes. The oils can break down plastic which could result in toxins in your bottle which completely defeats the purpose of making the switch!

Toilet Cleaner

Ingredients + recipe

  • 1/2 a cup of vinegar

  • 2/3 of a cup of baking soda

  • 3 drops of Tea Tree essential oil from DoTERRA

I used to combine these ingredients and tip around the edges of the toilet bowl but I have found placing each in separatly around the edge of toilet is more efficient.

  1. Firstly, tip in Vinegar around the edges of the bowl

  2. Next, sprinkle the baking soda in

  3. Lastly, place 3 drops of Tea Tree oil in too

Allow this to sit for 10 minutes. Once ingredients have settled, take a scrubbing brush and clean around the inside of the toilet.

* The alcohol allows the scent to go further.

I totally understand how overwhelming natural swaps can be at the beginning. My heart behind sharing these recipes is for you to gain more knowledge on how easy these swaps can be. This doesn’t mean you need to go and throw out every one of your cleaners right now. Use up what you’ve got and then make the change. That’s what I am doing. My next swap is laundry detergent!! So keep an eye out for a blog post on my recipe + review!

I hope this post inspired, encouraged and educated you a little more on low-tox cleaning.
